3 Resources to Give New Residents

By Danielle Wirsansky on September 30, 2017

When students start college, they often attend universities in a completely new place, whether it be a new city, a new state, or even a new country. For these young adults who are just starting out on their own and who have never been left to their own devices in a place that they have never been, it can be a huge boon to them if their property owners help them out by giving them a resource guide to the area.

It might not technically be in the job description of a property manager to provide such a guide to their new student residents, but providing it can help increase your renter’s satisfaction with your property and help students be happy in the new homes they have created. This guide can also be used as a selling point to describe all the closest and most important locations to your property.

Providing a guide can help you in the long run to not only maintain the student renters that you have but to recruit even more of them to live on your property. Read on to learn about the kinds of resources students would be most interested in learning about!

Transportation

One of the first things a student has to conquer when starting at a new school or in a new city is transportation and how to get around. Is your property in close enough proximity to the university that they could walk if they chose to? Or would they need to get around by motorized vehicle? Approximations like that can help guide a student to help them decide how they need to get around and if they can get around.

If the school your property is near does not have a lot of available parking, they will want to know about alternative modes to get to school besides driving themselves. Walking is always an option, as previously discussed, but there are other ways to get around. Does the university have its own bus service? If so, how close is the nearest stop to your property? Is there a stop in walking distance? These are all important questions that a student will have to ask. Then you must consider if the city also offers a similar bussing service to campus, and if so, where is the closest stop to your property and how close can the city bus take you to the campus?

Other, bigger cities may have other forms of public transportation as well such as trolley and train. Whatever your college town has got in the way of public transportation should be included in the resource guide for your student renters.

Food

The next thing your student renters are going to want to know about is where the food is. This can be restaurants to coffee shops to bars to grocery stores. If it has got something edible, your student renters will want to know. No matter what, a person has got to eat. You will want to recommend the best places to go that are nearby. You can include information like the walking distance, their daily hours, and what kind of food/drink they serve and if they have any special events they may host.

And students love to eat — knowing that they live in an area of town with close, quick, and easy access to a good array of restaurants will make a student more inclined to live at your property.

Many properties will even form relationships with other nearby locations including restaurants and the like. If you already have such partners, you can promote them in your resource guide. If you do not have such community partners, perhaps it is time to form one that could be beneficial to both parties. As you promote and recommend your businesses to each other, your property will flourish.

Medical Care

Another really important portion of the resource guide that you provide to students should be about the medical care options offered in the area. Providing this information can be a great selling point not only for students but for the parents that pay their children’s rent while they are at college. While a parent pays rent, they usually have some say over where their child lives. Your guide can appeal to a student renter’s parents as well.

Highlight your property’s proximity to hospitals, emergency care centers, 24/7 care centers, pharmacies, and more! You can get very detailed and show nearby family practice doctors and dentists so that those new to the area have at least a place to start when setting up new doctors in a new city. Assure student renters (and their parents) that should medical care be necessary, living at your property will help guarantee that you will be seen on time when you need to be.
